8 Steps To A Happier Life: Step 8

We’ve arrived at the final step in our “8 Steps to a Happier Life”, but this is just the beginning. Being happier isn’t a one-time occurrence, it’s a way of life. It’s something you choose to do, in spite of your circumstance. Being happier increases for us when we share it with others, and when we look within.

Step 8.  Create a safe haven in your home environment. Even if all you have is a corner in a shared room, make that corner your happy place. Decorate it with positive words and images of the life you are working towards. Cultivate an environment that nurtures you, a place where you can be yourself and has reminders or where you are trying to go. Let it be a place where you nurture yourself and invest in your well-being. Let it also be a place where you can rest and recuperate. Be happy where you are, but be prepared to launch out into more places where your happiness can grow.

It is my sincere hope that you employ these 8 tips and find more happiness in your life. If you have tips to share, I’d love to hear from you!

Step 7.  Plan for the inevitable and be flexible enough to bend and not break. Murphy’s Law (not a scientifically proven law) states that if anything can go wrong, it will go wrong. I don’t know what it’s like to drive in L.A. or New York, but I know what New Orleans, Atlanta and Miami are like during rush hour and times of construction. When I know I have to encounter their traffic, I prepare: I make sure I have bottled water, snacks, and enough gas in my tank and music choices for the radio. If you have to go shopping at a mega store or visiting the post office or DMV, be prepared to wait in long lines. Bring a book or put in your earbuds to listen to music; just be sure to be safe and aware of your surroundings. Some situations cannot be avoided, but it doesn’t mean you have to be miserable. Plan for those inconveniences and have a happier life.

Step 6.  Join a social group. As I stated in an earlier blog post I know a little bit about starting over. When you are in a new place due to changes in employment, education or other life circumstances, it can be a bit intimidating to make new friends. Even the most extroverted person wants to have options when it comes to people to spend precious recreational time with. Sometimes you are lucky enough to make new friends at work. Maybe a new place of worship or spiritual exploration provides like-minded people. If you need help meeting people to introduce you to more people, try a site affiliated with your interests/hobbies; a site like MeetUp.com.

Step 5.  Break from your usual routine. You may have a routine that consists of getting up, getting yourself and maybe others ready for the day, working, returning home to wind down, sleep, and then getting up to do it all over again tomorrow. Get off of that hamster wheel by switching things up. If you are employed outside of the home, switch up your lunch venue by packing lunch and eating it in a different location. If you immediately return home after work, try going to a movie on a weeknight instead. Do something that gets your body and your mind out of a rut. Those who are workout enthusiast know that sometimes you reach a plateau, a place where you are no longer seeing results, but instead are maintaining that status quo. In order to see changes, you have to change things up. Push yourself towards happiness by doing something fun that doesn’t require you to wait until the weekend.

Step 4.  DO something good for someone else, even if it’s anonymous. An old proverb states “When you water others, you water yourself.” It is true that what you make happen for others eventually happens for you. This goes for bad things as well. Your everyday actions sow invisible seeds into the universe. Sir Isaac Newton is credited (in his 1st Law of Thermodynamics) with stating that energy is neither created nor destroyed, it just changes form (I’m paraphrasing here). What you send out will eventually come back around. Some people call this karma, but whatever you call it, isn’t it better knowing something good is returning to you eventually?
